Upper Thames Autumn Head 2018

Hinksey had an encouraging start to the season at the Upper Thames Autumn Head last Sunday. 14 crews - some of our J14 girls in their first ever race - entertained the gathered Henley crowds with some inspired rows in sunny but challenging conditions.
Helped along by a blustering tail wind, the WJ18 double with Jojo Blyth and Harriet Wilson set the team up to a good start in the morning division and won their race in the 2nd fastest time of the day for any women’s double and age category, closely followed by team mates Jess Foster & Poppy Marshall in 4th, and Annie Wakefield & Mae Willoughby in 6th place.
The newly formed boys 4- with Hugo Binnian, Rafe Stanford, Ed Sanderson and Andrew Clark produced an excellent early season performance, beating a fair number of senior crews in the process. We are looking forward to seeing how this promising crew develops under the watchful eyes of coach Axel. The equally new J18 boys 4x with Jacob Taylor, Archie Licudi, Daniel Carpenter and Nicholas Adams performed well in their category against significantly older crews.
In a strong field of 12 doubles, our Godstow athletes Alice Channon and Alice Purvor completed a great morning’s racing with a very good 5th place in the WJ15 category.
Jojo, Harriet, Jess and Poppy later teamed up in the WJ18 quads and confirmed their good results from the doubles. They won their race in a determined row and clocked the fastest time of the day for any women’s quad.
Well done to all Hinksey crews. It was a hugely enjoyable event for everyone involved, with an incredibly motivating atmosphere within the squad, and we are looking forward to the races to come. Our next stop will be at the Head of the River Fours on November 3rd on the Tideway.
