Hinksey Sculling School has been working with primary and secondary schools throughout Oxfordshire for over 20 years, introducing children aged 11 - 18 to the sport of rowing.

Hinksey is unique in offering beginners the chance to learn on still water, with progression from a shallow pond to a larger lake just outside the centre of Oxford. This provides a fantastic learning environment, allowing athletes to progress at their own pace and according to their individual levels of confidence.

Courses cover different aspects of rowing including:

  • Sculling on the water
  • Using rowing machines
  • Developing fitness and mobility
  • Learning basic terminology, principles of navigation and safety precautions.

At the end of a ten-week course participants will be able to manoeuvre a single sculling boat confidently, with the requisite knowledge and technical ability to operate safely and effectively both on and off the water.

Session Length: between 60 and 90 minutes long, with timings to suit the school day.
Numbers: Maximum twelve athletes per session
Cost: £150 per session.

Athletes will take part in a capsize and swim test at an external venue by prior arrangement.

Testimonials

"We are very grateful for all of the support Hinksey Sculling School have given us.  From providing ergs for the Oxfordshire School Games County Finals to an ‘On the Water’ experience day for students that have never tried sculling before, Hinksey have always been enthusiastic and keen to offer their time.”

Harriet Olliffe, Youth Sport Officer for the Core Team of Oxfordshire Sport & Physical Activity.

"We have been delighted to be part of OARSchools with Hinksey Sculling school who provide experienced coaches and equipment for our pupils to learn how to row a single scull successfully with confidence. We bring about 12 pupils in a minibus and they have professional instruction using traditional racing boats starting in groups or pairs then moving onto the large lake practising slide and stroke work to include racing starts if competent. We all love being by the water and it is wonderful to see the progress our pupils make over such a short period of time. Hinksey have always been extremely reliable and committed to ensuring the enjoyment of this sport in various weather conditions weather providing either circuits or ergo tournaments indoors. Currently, 5 members of our school row for Hinksey club itself and we are very proud to support them racing at local and national events around the country".

Anna Marshall, The Marlborough School, Woodstock

"For the past 3 years I have used the pond and HSS singles for the early stages of the junior beginners courses run at WRC. The pond and lake are a perfect, and more importantly, safe facility for a novice junior new to the sport to have their first experience in a boat. On top of that, nothing is too much trouble for HSS whilst you are there!"
