It was a busy bank holiday for HSS, with the Junior Sculling Regatta and Wallingford Regatta marking the start of the regatta season. These two events were the first test for newly formed crews after a productive rowing camp in Bellecin over the Easter break.

Of the ten crews who raced on Dorney Lake at the Junior Sculling Regatta we made two A finals, four B finals and one C final. Crews had to race in a time trial, with the top crews then progressing to the seeded finals for side by side racing. Our top performing crew was the J16 girls quad (Jojo, Harry, Mae and Phoebe) who raced well to win a Bronze medal in their A final, building on their fourth place at Schools Head. The J18 boys quad (Stan, Will, Drew and Rafe) placed a highly commendable fourth in their A final, missing out on a medal by just one foot. The J14 and J17 girl’s doubles rowed well in their B finals to win and the J15 boys double also won their C final.

The following day the J16+ crews raced at Wallingford Regatta again on Dorney Lake. Run slightly differently, Wallingford consists of multi-lane racing in the heats with the first from each heat and the next 3-4 fastest times across all heats (based on the number of heats) progressing to the final. Our best result came from the top boy’s quad (Stan, Will, Drew, Rafe) who qualified and then placed fourth in the Men’s Challenge Quad event. Back in their own event (J18 Boys Quad) they raced in the fastest heat, narrowly missed out on making the final. The J16 Girls Quad (Jojo, Harry, Mae, Phoebe) had the same fortune, placing fourth in their heat and missing out on the final by two seconds. The J18 Boys Double (Hugo and Fred) had a straight final, placing 6th.

Both Regattas showed the standard of crews that will be racing at the National Schools Regatta (NSR) in late May. All squads will look to use the experience of multi-lane racing to push on at NSR.
