In 1988 when I was 8years old, my father dragged me down to Evesham Rowing Club, as his crew was in desperate need of a cox. Ever since then I have been heavily involved with rowing. In between coxing at Evesham RC, my main sports were swimming, triathlons, and cross country running. I reached County and National level in swimming for Evesham and Coventry. In 1996 I had a knee injury from skiing, and therefore my competitive swimming was over. In 1994 I decided to hang up my life Jacket and have a go at rowing. Ever since then until 2006, I have been training hard, competing for Evesham RC, Warwick RC, Worcester RC, and West Midlands, racing mainly in quads and eights.

I have won races at various regattas, qualified for Henley Royal Regatta 6 times as a junior and senior, racing in quads and fours. Reaching a National final, trialling for GB under 23’s, and finishing 12th at the eights head of the river race for Worcester, out of over 500 crews.

I became a coach when I passed my course in 1996, and have been a volunteer coach at Evesham RC from 1996 to 2007. I was one of three coaches who ran the Evesham Rowing Club Junior Girls section, from J13 to J18. We had some great successes with 6 girls rowing for GB, and 2 receiving International medals. In 2006 and took a job for the formerly known Amateur Rowing Association, as a Community Sports coach for rowing in Oxford. I was based at 3 clubs in Oxford. They were, Falcon, Oxford Adaptive, and Hinksey Sculling School. In this time I was also a satellite coach for British Rowing World Class Start.

In 2008 my funding for community sports coach ran out, and I was all set to leave coaching in Oxford, until Tom Collins offered me a coaching position at Hinksey Sculling School. I must have been doing something right, as I am still here, and really enjoying my time working at Hinksey and alongside other coaches, and with some great juniors. I may be here for a long time...

I started sculling at HSS at the age of 11 and was involved in their very first competitive appearance at Pangbourne Junior Sculls.  After moving schools I began rowing for Headington competing in many National events until deciding to take a break from rowing at the age of 16.

During my final year of university I returned to rowing with King’s College London and later competed for University of London at BUSA and Womens’ Henley.  I also began coaching with Lady Eleanor Holles School and Tideway Scullers School.  Whilst working at LEH I helped qualify a girls J16 4- for the Great Britain vs. France J16 match and subsequently coached the four at this event.

In September I moved back to Oxford and began rowing at Wallingford RC and coaching at HSS.

I first experienced sculling after being introduced to it by John and Tom. I stayed with Hinksey for seven years, competing and gaining knowledge of the sport I began to love. I achieved two bronze lightweight medals in the J18 category of the British Indoor Rowing Championships and in my final year with Hinksey I reached the J18 woman's single sculls final at National Schools Regatta. After finishing school I went off to university to gain my physiotherapy degree, where I spent one year rowing for Stains in an eight.

Since finishing my degree I have returned back to Oxford to teach young athletes how to row, at my home club. In addition to coaching at Hinksey I work as a physiotherapist part time in a clinic in Abingdon and part time at my own clinic in Wheatley Park Sports Centre. I have currently worked for two sports teams as a physiotherapist these have included the Oxford Cavaliers Rugby League Club and I am now currently working for the Oxford Harlequins Rugby Union Club.

I have been with Hinksey Sculling School for eight years now – mostly as an athlete, but now as a coach during my gap year before reading Agriculture at university in 2012. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to rowing by the late Noel Frost who ran an outreach ergo session at Wheatley Park. I enjoy coaching and encouraging novices and elite athletes alike, especially focusing on strength and fitness. Thanks to the great coaching at HSS I was invited to join the Leander Junior Academy in autumn 2010.

I was introduced to rowing in my first year at secondary school. Noel Frost ran an indoor outreach session on a Monday afternoon in which a small group of us would do some games on rowing machines.  I enjoyed these sessions but as I got older and the training got harder I grew to dread ergs, but I learned a great deal there and without it I wouldn’t be where I am now. After a couple of months there I began rowing at the lake and subsequently moved onto the river where I began to scull competitively.

In my sculling carrier I had medal success in singles, doubles and quads but unfortunately no national medals. During the middle of my 6 year career I began volunteering as a coach for the club which led me to a Level 2 qualification and the position I hold now. I stopped rowing about a year ago to pursue different avenues but continue to coach as I find it very rewarding and great fun.

I started sculling about 4 years ago at Oxford Adaptive Rowing Club at CORC and was coached by Hinksey’s very own Paul Redgwell where he taught me to scull i.e going for a swim even though the boat was "un-capsizable"!!!! After a year of rowing with adaptive I made the decision to go to Hinksey, where they put me in a fine racing boat for the first time ever. I didn’t fall in at the lake at all, I saved it until I came to the river at Godstow where I was put in a double with Henry Myatt and basically I was taught to scull again. After about 3 months I moved into a single scull where I have won various medals where I was coached by the very patient Tom Collins then Tim Messent arrived fresh from Evesham to come and coach at Hinksey and he got landed with me. I went to NSR 2009 and didn’t qualify in my single however, I went back in 2010 and qualified. I then came 6th in the semi-final.

I am studying AS ICT and computing at St Gregory the Great Catholic School in Cowley and started to coach about 2 years ago when I passed my UKCC Level 2.

Dan Bowen

I started coaching when I was 15 and believe I have found something that I will continue to do in some way wherever my life takes me (So watch out for the future prime minister on a launch near you). I qualified as an ARA level 2 coach shortly after my 16th birthday and most of my experience of coaching has been with beginners from Hinksey, Headington and various Oxford schools. I mostly coach down at Hinksey Lake, obviously best place to learn how to row. I find coaching at this stage in an athlete’s career to be most rewarding; and love the one to one coaching, as well as banter that the set up at the lake lets you incorporate into your coaching. As a coach you can get to know the atheletes, helping you translate the difficult rowing technique into simple, personalised advice.

I think I should point out that I do row and scull… quite well.

I am also the current Captain of Boats so if you want any more information on me (for whatever reason) head over to that section to fulfil your information cravings.

Happy rowing! – Dan.

I have helped to coach athletes from the launch ever since I was 14/15 after my own rowing session and have been coxing ever since I was J14. It is these two experiences that have taught me effective coaching techniques whether athletes are just learning the basic rowing technique, or whether they are working on very precise areas of the stroke. Currently, I am doing my Level 2 coaching course and am coaching beginners at the Hinksey lake and pond as well as helping with land training.

Marina Campbell

Marina

My name is Marina Campbell. I am 17 years old and go to Headington School in Oxford. I have been rowing for about 3 and a half years and thoroughly enjoy it. I have made many friends through being involved with Hinksey, improved my fitness and understanding of rowing and have been lucky enough to be involved in many events and new experiences with the club, which in turn have taught me many life skills.

Ella Carter

I first began coaching athletes my own age and under from when I was J15, this helped me to both develop my own training and technique and to be a good foundation for coaching juniors down at the lake. At the moment I am undertaking my UKCC Level 2 coaching course, which with the help of Hinksey will open up new opportunities within the rowing community, also aided by the experience that I am gaining from coaching beginners at the Lake, coaching after my own sessions and helping out with land training during the week. All of which are brilliant experiences for both the coaches and athletes and which I will be continuing with even after I complete my training as an athlete at Hinksey.
