D.O.B. 25.06.86

I started sculling at HSS at the age of 11 and was involved in their very first competitive appearance at Pangbourne Junior Sculls.  After moving schools I began rowing for Headington competing in many National events until deciding to take a break from rowing at the age of 16.

During my final year of university I returned to rowing with King’s College London and later competed for University of London at BUSA and Womens’ Henley.  I also began coaching with Lady Eleanor Holles School and Tideway Scullers School.  Whilst working at LEH I helped qualify a girls J16 4- for the Great Britain vs. France J16 match and subsequently coached the four at this event.

In September I moved back to Oxford and began rowing at Wallingford RC and coaching at HSS.

Nick Kenworthy-Browne

Nick’s first ventures into a sculling boat were short lived.  After pushing out, he attempted to wave to a friend and tipped magnificently into the water. He was about ten at the time and a pupil at The Dragon School. Sadly he left the school shortly after his first term of sculling and it was not until the end of his time at university that he was be able to re-ignite his rowing career when he moved in to live at St. Benet’s Hall in Oxford.  Here he was taught to row by Pete Selwood and represented the Hall’s 1st VIII gaining blades in Torpids of 1997.

It was during this time that Nick first started to consider coaching, taking charge of St. Peter’s College Women’s 2nd VIII and training them to qualify for Torpids and Summer Eights, the first time a second crew from this college had ever qualified. He took his ARA  Instructor’s Award in 1998 and his Bronze Award in 1999 while also taking up the position of Head Coach for Merton College, where under his tenure both the men and women’s crews gained blades and went up a division in both Torpids and Summer Eights. It was during his instructor’s award that  Nick first learnt about Hinksey Sculling School and joined the coaching staff.
The Head Coach for the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC), John Scotton, kindly allowed Nick to shadow him during this time and, after they beat Cambridge that year at Henley, Nick moved to run the rowing tank at OUBC where he also helped with the newly founded development squad.  Over the next few years Nick held the post of Head Coach in turn at Keble College then Brasenose College as well as a brief stint coaching the J15s at St. Edward’s School.

In 2001, Nick changed his career focus back to music, and with the aid of a scholarship, studied in America at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where he completed a Professional Diploma in Film Scoring. Not wanting to release his love of rowing, Nick became a volunteer coach at Boston University under the excellent guidance of Head Coach, Rodney Pratt. Here he added yet further experience to his coaching covering all levels from freshman to varsity crews.

When he returned to Oxford in 2005, Nick’s intentions to live without rowing where dashed when he learnt that Hinksey needed a new coach. The lure was too much, and he was pleased to be able to re-join a much expanded rowing set-up. This led in turn to taking up coaching the Women’s 1st VIII at Wolfson College, which was followed by taking charge of the men the following year. At the beginning of the 2007 academic year, Nick became the Head Coach for Christ Church Women’s Boat Club here in Oxford. They have won two races in two terms and have just risen in the Torpids rankings to the highest position they have ever held since the foundation went co-educational 27 years ago. He is proud to still be a part of the Hinskey Sculling School and looks forward to the coming successes they are sure to have.
