Code of Conduct
HSS Code of Conduct
This Code of Conduct sets a framework of expected behaviour for all athletes, coaches and parents/carers involved in Hinksey Sculling School, with the intention of fostering a culture of courtesy, good communication and safe practice to underpin all activities.
Athletes
Listen to coaches at all times and follow their instructions, both on and off the water.
Be aware of any other water users, and be available to help others in difficulty where it is possible to do this safely.
Treat visitors to the Club with courtesy and respect.
Assist in the preparation and putting away of boats - ensuring the equipment is safe, clean and tidy both before and after activities on the water. Ensure that all boats are STRAPPED DOWN before leaving the site.
Arrive punctually and fully prepared to all sessions. This means be wearing the correct clothing: - including sun hat/glasses/cap/hair band/bottle of water.
Endeavour to achieve maximum potential.
Be mindful of safety at all times, and respect the dangers involved in water based activities.
At no time during training or competition chew gum. (Inhaling it can cause death)
Be respectful of the decisions of coaches, umpires, referees or any other official. At all times safety is paramount and all officials have the duty to cancel operations at any time on the grounds of safety
When racing, follow expected etiquette regarding handshakes after races.
Be responsible for own valuables. If they are taken in the boat, see them stowed in a buoyancy tank or in a “bum bag” securely tied to the boat in case of capsize.
Breaches of this code by an athlete can, in persistent or extreme cases, incur a suspension for that athlete. Such suspensions can only be authorised by the Director of Coaching in consultation with the parents and coaches.
Coaches
Maintain clear communication with both athletes and parents/carers, particularly regarding the following:
· Safe practice, both on and off the water
· Times and locations of sessions
· Information about and response to weather conditions
· Expected training programme
Encourage athletes equally regardless of their ability and aspirations.
Make clear requests where assistance would be helpful from either athletes or parents/carers.
